Plastic Surgeon in Newport Beach Discusses Breast Implant Statistics from ASAPS

According to the latest data from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), breast augmentation is the most popular form of surgical cosmetic enhancement in the U. S. Of the 1.6 million surgical procedures performed, 318,123 patients underwent breast augmentation in 2010, 62% of which chose silicone implants. At her Newport Beach plastic surgery practice, Dr. Semira Bayati discusses this preference for silicone, and why her patients prefer the new generation of implants.

The latest study from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) shows more than 9.3 million cosmetic procedures were performed in the U. S. in 2010, 1.6 million of which were surgical in nature. Breast augmentation is the most popular form of surgical aesthetic enhancement, a statistic that Dr. Semira Bayati, a board-certified plastic surgeon in Newport Beach, CA, says is reflected at her practice.

Of the 318,123 breast augmentation procedures performed, 62% of patients chose silicone breast implants. While Dr. Bayati admits some patients still express some concern over the safety of silicone implants, she stresses that the FDA conducted extensive research over a 14-year period, which proved silicone implants were safe. She adds that the new generation of implants are very different from those used in the past. “The implant companies are constantly performing product testing and improvement. The current saline and silicone implants are far superior in durability, texture and feel compared to the same product, 20 years ago. The silicone cohesive gel design is the latest improvement is silicone implants, leading to less gel bleed and ease of removal should a rupture occur.”

As her patients consider breast augmentation in Newport Beach, Dr. Bayati says a majority of her patients choose the silicone gel implant because it looks and feels more like natural breast tissue. However, regardless of the type of implants her patients choose, she adds that the consultation is an important part of the decision-making process because it ensures her patients understand the finer details of each procedure and the overall difference between saline and silicone. “The main difference and area for concern with silicone versus saline implants has to do with the maintenance required for silicone. These implants need to have MRI surveillance for silent ruptures every 3-4 years and replacement between 10-15 years after insertion. Saline implants do not have these maintenance requirements at the present.”
