Dr. Semira Bayati answers frequently asked questions about breast augmentation surgery and breast implants.

Newport Beach, CA – Dr. Semira Bayati, a plastic surgeon in Newport Beach, says breast augmentation is one of the most popular procedures at her practice. In fact, the large number of procedures she performs is reflective of national trends – the American Society of Plastic Surgeons listed breast augmentation as the number one plastic surgery procedure in the U.S. for 2014, performed on 286,000 women. Dr. Bayati says women who consider adding volume to their breasts have many choices, and therefore many decisions to make before breast augmentation surgery. She says some of the most frequently asked questions she receives involve the size and shape of the breast implants themselves, as well as the potential for results that look natural.

When it comes to sizes and shapes for both saline and silicone breast implants, Dr. Bayati says there are a variety of options. She notes that “round” implants can often be ideal for women who are looking for a more prominent projection and increased volume in the upper areas of the breasts, while “teardrop”-shaped implants are designed with a “downward slope,” much like a natural breast, and can be beneficial for women who are very thin and are hoping to significantly enhance the size of the breasts.

Dr. Bayati says there are numerous size options for breast implants; however, it’s important for individuals to remember that “bigger” doesn’t necessarily mean “better.” The ideal breast implants, she notes, will add volume to a woman’s breasts while complimenting her overall body proportions. Dr. Bayati says rate of projection, range of profile, and the effect on the patient’s silhouette are all important considerations that should factor into the choice of implant size. During the initial consultation, Dr. Bayati shows patients an array of breast implants of varying sizes and shapes and even has them “try them on” with a special bra in order to visualize the potential differences each implant can bring to their bodies.

Other questions Dr. Bayati says patients often have involve the placement of the implants themselves and age limits for breast augmentation procedures. The Orange County plastic surgeon says breast implants can be placed with a subglandular (over the chest muscle and behind the breast tissue) or a submuscular (behind the chest muscle) approach. She notes that subglandular breast implants can be an option for patients who have high amounts of breast tissue and want more spherical results, while submuscular implants are often ideal for women who have thin breast skin and are looking for very natural-looking outcomes.

In terms of age limits for breast augmentation, Dr. Bayati says patients must be 18 or older for saline breast implants and 22 or older for silicone implants; however, there is technically no limit after that. She says women in their fifties have often had very successful breast augmentations. With that in mind, Dr. Bayati says, patients must be in reasonably good health to be a candidate for breast augmentation, and they should consult with their primary care physician for a comprehensive medical exam to make sure they do not have heightened risks for surgery.

Ultimately, Dr. Bayati says there are advantages and disadvantages to each type, size, and shape of breast implant – it all depends on the individual patient’s needs and goals. She advises women who are considering breast augmentation to be sure to see a board-certified, experienced plastic surgeon who will listen to their questions, talk with them honestly and openly about the potential results, and create a treatment plan that is completely customized to their needs.
