How Common is Gynecomastia and How is it Treated?

Enlarged breasts in men, a condition called gynecomastia, can be quite distressing.  Men with gynecomastia often feel self-conscious, un-masculine, insecure and even depressed.

Just how common is Gynecomastia?  Nearly half of all men may experience the condition at some time in their lives.  The good news is that gynecomastia usually disappears on its own and there are effective surgical treatments such as liposuction available for unfortunate circumstances when it doesn’t.

The causes of gynecomastia include obesity, hormonal imbalances, genetic disorders, illicit drugs such as marijuana, steroid abuse, medication side effects, chronic liver disease and aging.  No matter what the cause, men suffering from gynecomastia are usually embarrassed by their bodies.

Male breast reduction surgery is a very effective treatment option designed to remove excess tissue and re-contour the breasts.  The surgery is most often performed under general anesthesia as an outpatient.  Patients can usually return to work after one week.  Please contact our office if you are interested in obtaining additional information about male breast reduction.
