Plastic Surgeon in Newport Beach Discusses Body Contouring in Max Sports & Fitness Magazine

Dr. Semira Bayati, a plastic surgeon in Orange County, recently discussed post-bariatric plastic surgery options in Max Sports & Fitness Magazine’s October 2011 issue. The article covers plastic surgery options for minimizing excessive sagging skin after extreme weight loss. Dr. Bayati discusses post-bariatric surgery treatments such as a central body lift, tummy tuck, or breast lift and the health complications that can arise from untreated excess skin.

Max Sports & Fitness Magazine recently published an article on post-bariatric plastic surgery options in their October 2011 issue featuring the advice of Dr. Semira Bayati, an Orange County plastic surgeon. The article discusses how to treat excessive sagging skin following extreme weight loss, providing information about procedures ranging from a belt lipectomy to breast lift. Dr. Bayati says many patients expect to feel a renewed sense of pride and confidence in their bodies following dramatic weight loss, but many are unaware that weight loss is often just the beginning of a longer journey to attain their desired appearance. She says patients can become frustrated after putting so much effort into losing weight and still not feeling proud of their bodies.

Depending on how quickly a person loses weight and the amount of pounds lost, Dr. Bayati says each person can experience different degrees of loose skin. A person’s genetics, age, and ethnicity can also be contributing factors as skin retains unique levels of elasticity in each person. Regardless of the amount of excess skin, Dr. Bayati says many of her patients are willing to take measures to recontour their bodies through a cosmetic procedure such as a tummy tuck or thigh or arm lifts.

Dr. Bayati says that while reducing excess skin provides significant cosmetic benefits, it can also lessen the risk of health complications as well. She says large amounts of skin can cause rashes and chafing which can lead to infections. Dr. Bayati also adds that sagging skin can often increase discomfort in patients during normal exercise and daily life, to a point where exercise can become ineffective and a burden. “After weight loss surgery, the patients feel they still have some issues with body image related to the loose, excess skin left behind. Skin reduction and body contouring procedures after massive weight loss, have a huge psychological benefit for these patients. Further, it makes it much easier to fit in clothing, without having to continue ‘hiding’ problem areas.”

Because of the great health and cosmetic benefits that skin tightening procedures can offer following weight loss, Dr. Bayati says she recommends her patients consider plastic surgery in Newport Beach as a way to reach their personal aesthetic goals and make the most out of their accomplishments. She also stresses the importance of consulting with a board-certified surgeon working with a dedicated, professional staff before undergoing such a complex and multi-faceted procedure. “Aside from the psychological benefits of post weight loss body contouring surgery, there is a reduction in medical issues, such as skin breakdown, rashes and infections that occur commonly in the folds of excess skin. I commonly hear that these patients do not feel completely normal and happy until the excess skin is removed and the body regains its normal contour after plastic surgery.”

Stem Cells in Aesthetic Surgery Procedures? Our Newport Beach and Orange County, CA Plastic Surgeon Offers her Thoughts

During the ASAPS Aesthetic Meeting of 2011, a gathering of plastic surgeons from across the globe to discuss the latest techniques in aesthetic enhancement, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) and the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) issued a joint statement on the use of stem cells in aesthetic surgery procedures. Basing their findings on a study of peer-reviewed literature, the two organizations found that while stem cells for plastic surgery treatments may hold promise for the future, there is little existing data on the safety and effectiveness of the technique. ASAPS and ASPS joined forces to conduct the study after growing concerns from plastic surgeons that advertising and marketing touting the use of stem cell therapy in aesthetic procedures may not reflect that the technique has not yet been substantiated by scientific evidence.

Although Dr. Semira Bayati makes it a priority to bring her patients the latest in plastic and cosmetic surgery techniques, she believes that safety and superior results are the most important promises she makes to her patients. While stem cell therapy may one day be available for our Newport Beach and Orange County, CA-area patients, Dr. Bayati will follow the recommendations of the joint task force, which recommend further clinical study and strict guidelines on how plastic surgeons should market aesthetic treatment with stem cells. Dr. Bayati says, while the future of stem cell therapy in aesthetic surgery looks extremely promising, you should always consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon when considering any type of cosmetic enhancement treatment, and be wary of advertisements that may be pushing too far ahead of what the scientific and plastic surgery communities have yet to prove.

Dr. Semira Bayati Backs New Breast Implants Registry to Ensure Any Reports of Complications are Addressed

Dr. Semira Bayati is supporting a national breast implants registry that will compile reports of a very rare condition that can affect patients who have had breast augmentation. As of January of this year, the condition, called Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (ALCL), has only been seen in 34 patients out of the 5 to 10 million women all over the world who have breast implants. Manifesting in scar tissue that forms around the implant, ALCL in most patients with breast implants can be treated in a number of ways, including ultimate removal of scar tissue and the implant itself. The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), the world’s leading organization devoted to plastic surgery and cosmetic enhancement, recently supported a decision made by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to put together a national breast implants registry that will document cases of ALCL, helping with the evaluation and monitoring of breast implants.

Dr. Bayati, as well as ASAPS, ASPS, and the FDA all believe that breast implants are safe. They also all share the belief that continued study and rigorous review of even the slightest possibility of complications with breast implants are imperative to ensure the continued safety of patients and the reduction of any associated risks.

Dr. Bayati says women who have had breast implants should be very diligent about examining their breasts regularly and going for routine follow-up exams, in addition to their regular mammograms. If patients notice any pain, swelling, or other regularities after having breast augmentation, they are encouraged to contact their doctor as soon as possible.

Dr. Bayati Breast Reconstruction Patient Profile

Orange County Newport Beach Breast ReconstructionA recent patient of Dr. Bayati’s was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 29. She first discovered a lump in one of her breasts when she conducted a self-examination at home due to some soreness in the area. Following a mammogram and an ultrasound, her doctor ordered a biopsy, which tested positive for breast cancer. A little over two weeks later, she underwent a double nipple sparing mastectomy and breast reconstruction.

Following her initial diagnosis, she consulted two general surgeons for her mastectomy, and both recommended Orange County board certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Bayati for the breast reconstruction. While she scheduled a second appointment with another plastic surgeon, she says she instantly connected with Dr. Bayati, and adds that choosing her was the easiest decision she had to make: “Her strong and positive persona is something I will forever be grateful for in this journey because she helped ease many of my apprehensions and fears.”

Dr. Bayati’s patient says the initial diagnosis was overwhelming and affected her confidence and body image. However, she says Dr. Bayati restored that confidence and returned a sense of normalcy to her life. “I cannot thank Dr. Bayati and her staff enough for their help and support in this chapter of my life.”

The Skinny on Tummy Tucks

Tummy tuck (also called abdominoplasty) is a very popular cosmetic surgery procedure that tightens abdominal muscles, removes excess fat and skin from the stomach area to create a tighter, slimmer, smoother belly.

Tummy Tuck Candidates Suffer From

  • Stomach muscles that have stretched from pregnancy
  • Excess abdominal skin following massive weight loss
  • Abdominal fat is resistant to diet and exercise

A tummy tuck can be combined with other procedures such as liposuction of the flanks and bra-strap area to further enhance the result by helping to achieve a slimmer waist line.  Although combining procedures results in extra operative time, the added risks are minimal.  Plastic surgeons are uniquely qualified to combine these two techniques.  Our Newport Beach cosmetic plastic surgeon, Dr. Bayati will meet with you to determine if you are a candidate.  Contact us to schedule your consultation.

How to Maintain Beautiful Skin

As we grow older, our skin tissue breaks down and loses its elasticity.  Often times we struggle to hide and erase our wrinkles especially as we begin to notice the signs of aging.  We have enclosed some suggestions to help you keep your skin smooth, glowing and gorgeous.

Non-Surgical Wrinkle Treatment Options

Most over the counter creams and lotions temporarily pump our skin with fluid.  Medical treatments such as microdermabrasion and non-ablative laser treatments can remove the top layer of your skin and decrease lines to freshen your appearance.   BOTOX® Cosmetic is another option to soften wrinkles.  BOTOX® Cosmetic weakens the muscles in your face to reduce your fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes, nose and forehead.  JUVÉDERM®, Restylane® and Radiesse® are injectable treatments that fill wrinkles around your mouth and nose.

Skin Health

Taking the time to care of yourself in today’s world of busy schedules is important!  You can help to maintain beautiful skin by living a healthy lifestyle with good nutrition, adequate hydration, regular exercise, proper rest, minimal alcohol consumption and smoking cessation.

Are You Ready for Beach Weather?

Spring is already here! You have been eating right and exercising regularly, but are you ready to wear that two piece bikini that you bought for your new year’s resolution? Are you having a hard time with those stubborn problem areas? Liposuction can help you achieve a more youthful shapely appearance.

Liposuction is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures. It can provide very satisfying results by helping you to get rid of those stubborn areas and improve your overall body shape. Liposuction is both a scientific and an artistic procedure. There are several liposuction techniques including suction assisted liposuction, power assisted lipectomy, ultrasound assisted lipectomy among others. Dr. Bayati will help you determine which technique is best for your needs.

The duration of the procedure varies between 1 – 3 hours, depending upon how much work is being done. Most people can return to work in a few days to a week. Liposuction produces immediate results and should be used to address your problem areas. Excessive weight gain in the range of 10-15 pounds can diminish the results. Therefore, it is important to maintain a healthy weight before and after surgery. Dr. Bayati strongly recommends being diligent in dieting and exercising to maintain your results.
